Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Throat, Esophagus Cancer

Eating higher amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is linked to an increased risk of cancers related to the upper aerodigestive tract, a recent study has found. Specifically, every 10% increase in UPFs was associated with a 23% higher risk of head and neck cancer and a 24% higher risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Previous research has already revealed a potential link between UPFs and certain types of cancer, including colon cancer. The latest study sought to explore this link further by analyzing diet, health, and lifestyle data for more than 450,000 adults over a period of about 14 years.

The researchers were not surprised to find an association between UPFs and cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract, but one unexpected finding was that the increased cancer risk did not appear to be directly tied to weight gain. Another possible theory is that certain additives, like emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners, may raise health risks.

“This study adds to a growing pool of evidence suggesting a link between UPFs and cancer risk,” said Dr. Helen Croker. “The association between a higher consumption of UPFs and an increased risk of developing upper-aerodigestive tract cancer supports our Cancer Prevention Recommendations to eat a healthy diet, rich in wholegrains, vegetables, fruit, and beans."

Beans Improve Gut Health, May Lower Cancer-Related Inflammation

Eating a cup of navy beans daily with meals positively affects the gut microbiome in a way that can lower inflammation, some new research has found. The specific gut changes caused by the beans are also associated with cancer prevention and improved treatment outcomes.

All beans, particularly navy beans, are rich in prebiotic fiber that “feeds” good gut bacteria as well as amino acids and other nutrients that support gut health. This, in turn, helps to regulate inflammation in the body and supports overall immune function.

The study looked at the effects of adding navy beans to the diet of colorectal cancer survivors who often develop gut imbalances. Over a 16-week trial, eating beans increased diversity of beneficial gut bacteria while decreasing pathogenic bacteria, which could translate to better cancer outcomes.

Though beans are readily available and inexpensive, many people avoid them due to gastrointestinal “difficulties” when digesting them. However, consuming them regularly and using good preparation methods – like soaking them – can improve the digestibility of beans.

The Natural Way to Enjoy Deep, Rejuvenating Sleep

A good night’s sleep is KEY to vibrant health, energy, and focus.

In fact, losing out on sleep night after night has been linked to numerous health problems, including a higher risk of heart disease, obesity, autoimmune disorders, and much more. If any of this sounds familiar and you simply can’t find a way to get quality rest, there’s a good chance hormones – especially cortisol – are playing a role in your sleep difficulties. That’s exactly why Vibrant Blue Oils created their Circadian Rhythm® oil blend. It’s formulated with a specific combination of essential oils that can cross the blood-brain barrier to calm hormones, support the pineal gland (the one that releases melatonin), and induce sleep. Each batch is tested to be free of pesticides, synthetic chemicals, and adulterants for your best natural night’s sleep yet.

10 Incredible Health Benefits of Pomegranates, Including Skin Protection

Pomegranate trees are known to thrive in harsh conditions, producing delicious fruit that’s rich in polyphenol antioxidants. The fruit has a surprising number of health benefits, including an ability to support gut health and optimal immune function. Other research links it to better heart health, anti-cancer properties, urinary system support, and improved oral health. Pomegranate juice may even help protect skin against UV damage and could slow memory loss. (More)

Walking More Quickly Could Lower Your Type 2 Diabetes Risk

Regular exercise is one way to help lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but some new research has now found that simply walking at a faster pace may also reduce diabetes risk – independently of how much you walk. Brisk walking had the most benefits as compared to “strolling.” This is likely due to the fact that faster walking speeds are associated with better cardiorespiratory fitness, although walking at any speed is still better than not exercising at all. Night Shift Work Linked to Higher Risk of Sleep Disorders

Nighttime shift work is a common cause of disrupted circadian sleep-wake rhythms. It has already been linked to poorer sleep quality, and a new study has found an association between night shift work and a greater risk of sleep disorders, including insomnia and sleep-related breathing disorders. Overall, a little over half of those working night shifts reported at least one sleep disorder, while 26% had two or more sleep disorders. (More)

Eating Oily Fish May Help Fend Off Heart Disease

Oily fish – like salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines – are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which are thought to have a number of benefits for overall health. According to some new research, eating more fish rich in omega 3s may help lower heart disease risk, especially for those with a family history of cardiovascular disease. On the flip side, not consuming enough EPA/DHA (the omega 3s present in oily fish) can increase the risk of heart disease even more for those who already have it in their family. (More)

12 Memory Problems That Look Like Alzheimer’s – But Aren’t

Alzheimer’s disease is a worry for many, whether it’s you or a loved one growing older, but sometimes memory problems are due to a different condition entirely. For example, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common (but little-known) cause of memory loss in older adults, and nutrient deficiencies – particularly B12 – can affect the mind as well. Hypothyroidism, Lyme disease, depression, and even diabetes can also cause symptoms that might resemble dementia.  (More)

Compelling Health Fact

Glial cells are a key component of the nervous system alongside neurons (nerve cells). They are believed to outnumber neurons in the brain and, though once thought to be mere “bystanders,” are now known to play a role in neuroplasticity and recovery from nerve injuries.
